As Delhi goes to polls later this year, the Congress-led Delhi government is giving more importance to Unique Identification Authority of India's (UIDAI) Aadhaar numbers by linking all government-related benefits to direct cash transfers.
The Revenue department, however, has made it clear that Aadhaar has been linked for delivery of services only for Revenue department.
"Work is on to implement linking of nine Centrally sponsored schemes to Aadhaar for direct cash benefits. For school students, the current focus is on those who are beneficiaries under these schemes," Divisional Commissioner Dharam Pal, also in-charge of Aadhaar enrolments for the state government, told Newsline.
Having already announced direct cash transfer scheme under various Centrally sponsored schemes, the government is implementing the linkage for nine schemes at present.
These include post-matriculation scholarship for scheduled caste candidates, post-matric scholarship for OBC candidates, Janani Suraksha Yojna of Health department, Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojna, matric scholarship scheme, Maulana Azad national fellowship, merit cum means scholarship scheme, national incentive to the girl child for secondary education, and the national means cum merit scholarship scheme.
The office of the Divisional Commissioner has also issued instructions to all district commissioners to "ensure special arrangements in schools for this purpose".
Pal said there should be no confusion in the minds of the public with regard to linking of government services to Aadhaar.
"I clarify that Aadhaar has been linked to delivery of services in Revenue department only. The department has not issued instructions to any other department for making Aadhaar mandatory for delivery of their services," the revenue secretary said.
