The University of Sikkim (mostly known as Sikkim University) is located in the city of Gangtok, Sikkim, India. It is newly opened university but well reputed in the state of Sikkim. The Sikkim University was established in the month of June 2007 under an Act of Parliament of India as a central University. The first vice-chancellor of the University was Mahendra P.Lama. The main objective behind the foundation of the University is to provide the higher education with an idea of development of the students. All the colleges in the state of Sikkim are affiliated with this University. The University was recognized by the University Grant Commission.
The library of the University is so large. It contains all the books which are helping out the students in their respective degree / diploma courses. Some general knowledge books are also available for all the students. Thousands of students read in this University in each year. It is the most popular university in the state of Sikkim. The University offers various traditional and non-traditional courses in humanities, physical and life sciences, forestry, ethnic history, mountain studies, border studies and hill music and culture.
