Sandhya Mukherjee is an Indian playback singer who is predominantly known for singing Bengali songs. She is also known for refusing to accept the Padma award on the eve of Republic Day in 2022.

Sandhya Mukherjee was born on Sunday, 4 October 1931 (age 90 years; as of 2022) in Dhakuria, Calcutta. Her zodiac sign is Libra. She attended Dhakuria Balika Vidyalaya, West Bengal and Binodini Girls' High School, West Bengal. Her music training was held under Pandit Santosh Kumar Basu, Professor A T Kannan, and Professor Chinmoy Lahiri, and she took Indian classical music training from her guru Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, and later from his son Ustad Munavvar Ali Khan.

Sandhya made her singing debut in 1948 with the song 'Ab Nahi Dharat Dheer Dheer' from the movie Anjaan Garh.

She has sung Hindi songs in more than 17 films. She has sung many Hindi songs that include Aayee Mere Jeevan Ki Saanjh Suhani (1948), Bol Papihe Bol Kaun Hai Tera Chitchor (1951), Jungle Mangal (1953), Maine Jo Lee Angrayee Teri Mehfil (1956), and Tose Naina Laage Re Saanwariya (1966).

- Sandhya is known by other names like Sandhya Mukhopadhyay and Gitashree Sandhya Mukherjee.
- In 1946, she took the first position in the Gitashree Examination.
- In 1952, after singing for two years in Mumbai, she went back to her hometown Kolkata. There she got married and her husband used to help her with the lyrics to many of her songs.
- After some years of her career, she collaborated with Bengali singer Hemanta Mukherjee and their partnership became very famous in the Bengali singing industry. They lent their voice to Bengali actor Uttam Kumar and actress Suchitra Sen.
- In 1971, during the Bangladesh Liberation War, Sandhya helped the refugees from Kolkata and West Bengal. She also recorded patriotic songs with Bangladeshi musician Samar Das for a radio broadcasting Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra to help during the Bangladesh Liberation War. She was also the first artist to visit Dhaka who performed on the Bangladeshi independence day in 1971.

There is no politics in it. She is far beyond any politics. Please don't try to find out any political reasons in it. She felt insulted, that's all."
